Hey PMs
Happy Friday. Here is an interesting post on the topic of team topologies in product development.
Organizing your org chart for product management, engineering, design, QA is a challenge. There are so many variables and no specific best practice.
There is an adage that you ship your org chart.
In this article, Linears product head Nan Yu offers a compelling argument for a new way of designing your org. He speaks about Conways law pervading most product organizations. Not enough resources on the core parts of the product. Equal team sizes for non core parts of the product which then get bloated because the team has to fill that time and come ahead.
Nan suggested that teams should not be symmetrical e.g. 1 pm, 5 eng, 1 UX, 1 QA.
They should be variable in sized based on focus of the product.
Here is the full article. This is going to be especially useful for founders who are scaling and expanding the team.
